The surf subculture originated in the 50s and 60s amongst the young people hanging around the beaches together to create a separation between them and older generations, and is embodied by the music, literature, films, jargon and the fashion, all centered around surfing. The original surfer style of long lace-up canvas shorts, a front-pocket crew neck t-shirt, sun-bleached hair and leather sandals started in the late 50s and was adopted by ‘partiers’ who weren’t surfers, simply wanting the credibility without the dedication and skill.
