"I had a studio in what had been a Victorian Mental Hospital in the east end of London, I persuaded loads of people to come out there to be photographed, they always turned up looking forlorn, Elliott Smith was no exception. Over the years I've taken a lot of photographs of people that aren't at ease with the process. Elliott was acutely uncomfortable but resigned to the task at hand, I probably spent most of the session mentally trying to make him comfortable but ruining any peace by constantly inflicting him with barrage of brief intense flashing light. In retrospect, I feel I'd have achieved better pictures had I used natural light and a small camera: that said - I love this picture." - Photographer Steven Gullick.
